Profile:
Is anyone truly beyond redemption? Many would argue that the worst of the Decepticons are, and yet it came to pass after centuries of waging war throughout the universe that the ruthless leader of the Decepticons and despotic conqueror of thousands of worlds, Megatron, had a change of heart, repented his evil ways, and even became an Autobot. Many assume that Megatron's change of heart was a ruse; who could blame them? For a long time Megatron defined himself by the motto "peace through tyranny", and even after surrendering to justice, he used a technicality - an appeal to the judgment of the long-lost Knights of Cybertron - to escape actual punishment for his crimes against the Cybertronian species. But Megatron's change of heart was indeed genuine. Faced with a disaster that would destroy all Cybertronians - Autobot, Decepticon, and neutral - Megatron was looked to for leadership. During that crisis, Megatron found an unlikely friend and critic in the Autobot Bumblebee. Bumblebee pointed out that for all Megatron's talk of fighting for freedom, he never intended for anyone to be free - he was just using it as an excuse for his violent tendencies. Reflecting on Bumblebee's words, Megatron realised the Autobot was right. Victory was won through winning hearts and minds to your way of thinking, not dominating others through force of arms. Thus, Megatron officially disbanded the Decepticons and declared himself an Autobot. Swearing to never again take up arms, Megatron joined Rodimus' quest to find the Knights of Cybertron, declaring he would submit to their judgment, and accept whatever punishment they deemed necessary. Although greeted by suspicion, on that long journey Megatron proved he had forsworn his heinous ways, helping those around him become better individuals and opening up to others, even becoming friends with Rodimus and Ultra Magnus, who for centuries had been his enemies. Truly, if given the right opportunities, even the evil leader of the Decepticons might find his way to redemption.Cybertronian hovertank mode:
Toys of Transformers Generation 1 Megatron (Lost Light)
Mastermind Creations Tyrannotron
As a recap for those who didn't check out the D-16 post, this third party release is utterly brilliant; a toy who has interchangeable parts to form two different versions of Megatron: his younger self when he was starting out as a miner-turned gladiator, and this version representing Megatron in the present day in all his Super Megatorn inspired glory.
This guy is absolutely beautiful; a really solid and poseable design that evokes the look of Megatron, while adding a few modern twists to reflect the comic design of the time. The transformation is clever, and turns the robot form into a hovertank / gunship type design. It is a very sleek, dynamic design that feels very distinct from his D-16 look. As I've said before, I don't buy many third party toys, but when I do it is things like this which fill a niche in my Generations collection.
